LaVern Vern Thurm
LaVern "Vern" Roy Thurm, 81, of Readlyn, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Vern was born June 20, 1935, in rural Black Hawk County, the son of Roy and Helen (Stumme) Thurm. He was baptized July 7, 1935 and confirmed April 10, 1949 at St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek. He graduated from Readlyn High School with the class of 1953. Shortly thereafter, he served with the Iowa National Guard. On November 24, 1955, he was united in marriage to LaVonne May Wilharm at St. John American Lutheran Church in Sumner, Iowa. He was employed with Rath Packing for over 30 years, Swiss Valley, and then retired from Bertch Manufacturing after 10 years of service. He then worked part-time at the Readlyn Co-op. LaVonne died May 10, 2014, and Vern continued to make his home in Readlyn.

Vern was a longtime-active member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served several years as a Trustee. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, woodworking and driving around in his golf cart. His prized possession was a 1955 pink and white Crown Victoria.

Vern is survived by three sons; Kevin (Tammi) Thurm of Readlyn, Keith (Becky) Thurm of Anamosa and Kendall (Susie) Thurm of Center Point, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, sisters; Jean Buenzow of Readlyn, Doris (Larry) Hagenow of Readlyn and Ruth (David) Wittenburg of Readlyn, brother; Roger (Shirley) Thurm of Denver. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife LaVonne, brother; Delbert Thurm, sister; Lois Boevers, brother-in-law; Merlin Buenzow, and two little angels in infancy.

Funeral Services were be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn with Pastor Kim Thacker officiating. Burial followed in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Readlyn. Visitation was held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Readlyn and for an hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
