Gielau receives Golden Plaque of Distinction Award
Barb Gielau, long-time head coach for the Denver Girls Soccer program, was selected to receive the Golden Plaque of Distinction Award from the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union.

Gielau was honored with this award by the Union prior the 1A final championship match at the Girls State Soccer Tournament on June 10.

The IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession. Of the hundreds of soccer coaches who have coached the sport over numerous years, Barb is only the 5th coach to have been selected to receive this honor. For those of you that know Barb, you know that this is much deserved and such a huge honor for not only her, but for the Denver Girls Soccer Program.

Barb was instrumental in getting both the recreational soccer program into Denver in 1999 and the high school program starting in the spring of 2000. She became the head coach in 2004 and has coached over 169 girls in her 13 years at the helm. She has a career record of 147 wins, and 69 losses and never had a losing regular season.

She has only missed 2 games in the 18 year history of the program as a parent or a coach. She has served as a director for the NE Iowa 1A District for the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, and has also served on the Iowa Girls Union Soccer Advisory Board. Gielau is also a past-president of the Denver School Board and the Cyclone Athletic Boosters.
