Football team will be competitive
By Sean Kiefer

With the Denver Cyclone football team preparing for the upcoming season, everyone is eager to see what this new team will be like. Cyclone Head Football Coach Rhett Barrett says, “As long as we avoid injuries, I think we’ll be very competitive like we have in the past.”

At the end of last season, the Cyclones lost their seniors and leaders Sam Joerger, Bo McMahon, Kain Eagle, Casey Anderson, Kevin Walsh, Zach Miller, Mason Tierney, and Dalton Austin. Joerger and McMahon led the Cyclones offensively last year, Joerger racking up 586 passing yards and 1280 rushing yards, and McMahon rushing for 1212 yards. Eagle on offense had 3211 total kickoff yards and a PAT percentage of 81.8%. Anderson, Walsh, and Tierney helped lead the defense with 127 tackles total between the 4. Unfortunately for Miller and Austin, they both sat out for most of the season due to injuries and other reasons. Even though last year’s seniors are gone, Coach Barrett says, “The new seniors are going to have to lead the underclassmen to ways we’ve played in the past.”

This year’s seniors include Connor Smith, Zach Miller, Brock Farley, Riley Wright, Jaden Forde, Cael Krueger and Melique Jenkins.

Last season Krueger and Smith were overshadowed by the seniors, but Krueger did pass for 190 yards and Smith rushed for 66 yards last season.
Farley and Wright both played major roles last year, Farley on defense making 32.5 tackles, 9 of them for loss. Wright last season received 15 passes for 180 yards. Forde made 10 total tackles, and Jenkins didn’t play due to injuries.

Coach Barrett’s comment on the incoming freshman wasm “We have 15-16 of them coming in this year, and they’re a really talented group so they can be a big help in the future.”

Other players to watch for are Colton Reiter, Zach Thrasher, Nathan Eggena, and Logan Tierney. All of these players are young and have played Cyclone football in the past, and next year these players will be the senior leaders.
The Cyclones will be coached again by Rhett Barrett and his assistant coaches.
