The Denver varsity girls’ basketball team won 56-13 and the varsity boys won 87-41 in their opening games Nov. 26 against West Central.

The ladies were led by upperclassmen Kambrie Clinton, Sarah Steege, Lila Meyer, Lexi Lyons, and Jaden McMahon. Each upperclassmen contributed six or more points and several rebounds. With the help of the upperclassmen, the Cyclones were able to hold the Blue Devils scoreless for a whole quarter.

Freshman Reese Johnson and sophomores Rachel and Emma Hennessey were also key parts of the rotation that kept the Cyclones’ momentum going through the game. Sami Gehrke, Bella Laures, Natalie Harberts, Sydney Eggena and Riley Schumacher also contributed to the lady Cyclones’ 56-13 win.

In a post-game interview with Cyclone Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach, Joe Frost, he said, “We came out with energy and did well defensively, getting deflections and turnovers.”
He added, “Tonight and tomorrow night are going to be very different, tomorrow night the conference season starts.”

The men had a very similar night as they cruised to an 87-41 victory. The sophomore trio of Isaac Besh, Bryce Phelps, and Kyler Matthias all helped by nailing a total of 10+ three-point shots combined.

Seniors Alex Gebel, Zach Miller, and Devin Baas all helped score in the paint and played a stellar defense. Luke Prendergast, Caylor Hoffer, Connor Corday, and Connor Sheridan also got to participate in the men’s 87-41 victory.

In a post-game interview with Cyclone Boys’ Varsity Basketball Head Coach, Kyle Matthias, he said, “Tonight we pushed the ball around a lot better than in our jamborees and scrimmages.”

He added, “Bryce is doing well offensively and that is helping us out.”

The Lady Cyclones took on Union Tuesday, November 27, at the Cyclone Center while the men’s next game wasn’t until Friday, November 30, at Dike-New Hartford. Read about the girls’ Union game on page 11.
