Celebrate the ‘Week of the Young Child’
By Lindsey Corell

For 15 years, Discoveries Learning Center has focused on giving young children quality care and education, as well as helping their families. During the week of April 8, staff, students and families will take part in celebrating the “Week of the Young Child.”

The “Week of the Young Child” is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The purpose of the “Week of the Young Child” is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Starting April 8 and ending on April 12, Discoveries Learning Center will be one of the many schools from around the country celebrating young children.

In the fall of 2004, Discoveries Learning Center began in a single classroom at Denver Elementary located at 401 Franklin Street. At the time, there were only 15 students and three staff members. When grades kindergarten through second grade moved over to the current elementary building, Discoveries Learning Center filled the building with more preschool classrooms. In August of 2017, a second location was opened in Waverly. Today, Discoveries Learning Center serves two communities with over 250 students and around 55 staff members. Discoveries Learning Center serves children from age two through 5th grade during the hours from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

To celebrate the “Week of the Young Child” several activities are planned. On Music Monday, three-year-old preschool teacher Cassidy Atchison visited each classroom and provided a fun music experience. Tasty Tuesday allowed students to follow a recipe to make their own healthy breakfast followed by outdoor games focusing on fitness. On Work Together Wednesday, children will explore math and science concepts while working together as they take part in their own building creations. Children will continue to develop creativity, social skills and fine motor skills with open-ended art projects where they can make choices, use their imaginations and create with their hands on Artsy Thursday. Family Friday will wrap up the week celebrating families as they are children’s first and most important teachers.

“‘The Week of the Young Child’ is a great week for us to be able to highlight the importance of high-quality early care and education,” said Discoveries Learning Center Director Kathy Bohlmann. “This is a really fun week to provide some extra activities for the students. It's also a time to acknowledge our great staff and the wonderful experiences they provide daily for the youngest learners of our district."
