It was a very nice night in Waverly for substate rugby play on May 7, pitting Denver against Crestwood.

This was the first postseason game for the Denver Cyclone Rugby Club, and they showed the world what they can do. Denver scored tries from Isaac Besh, Alex Krabbenhoft, Cooper Isaacson, Trevor Dorn and Kaden Baumgartner. Denver’s defense also was strong and held Crestwood to only one try that was scored at the end of the game.

In an interview with Denver Head Coach Dean Deutmeyer, he said: “It was a good team win, a lot of guys got to score and we tried some at kicking.”
He added, “It was a good competitive game and we made no mistakes.”

To note, rugby in Iowa is becoming increasingly popular. The Denver community and Denver Schools have shown a great amount of support for a rugby team.

The Denver rugby team has seen quite a bit of success, a state tournament appearance in their first year and a plethora of wins overall.
You can learn more about youth rugby in Iowa at the Iowa Youth Rugby Association’s website, They are the organizers of all rugby games and events.

Congratulations to this Denver rugby team for being successful and bringing something new to the city of Denver!
