Plans underway for European trip

Next July, five instrumental and vocal students will be attending the 2020 Iowa Ambassadors of Music in Europe.

Senior Jacob Davis, trombone, senior Bailey Dunkin, percussion, senior Sam Lockhart, french horn, junior Emily Thedens, soprano vocalist and freshman Kahri Burk, alto vocalist were nominated by instrumental music instructor Dan Cooper or vocal music instructor Janeece Downs and selected by Iowa Ambassadors of Music to represent Denver and the state of Iowa. They will be performing in the European Concert Tour from July 3 to July 18.

“The students nominated for the Iowa Ambassadors trip need to be students that show musical skills as well as strong character,” said Cooper. “The students representing us will truly be our ambassadors across Iowa and to the rest of the world. It is a great privilege to have these musicians sharing what great things are going on at Denver to the rest of the world.”

Students will start their adventure with three days of practice at Grinnell College from June 29 to July 2. There will be a concert for the families the evening of July 2.

The students will depart for their European tour on July 3. The students will be traveling to England, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy and Germany. Lockhart and Thedens have elected to extend their trip by four days and tour Greece as well. Davis, Dunkin and Burk will return home on July 18 and Lockhart and Thedens will return home on July 23, after touring Greece.

For sixteen days, the students will be performing in each country and also get the chance to sightsee.

“I am excited to do what I love in seven different countries, but also to have a vacation with the people I love most,” said Davis.

In England, the students will get to explore London by visiting such places as Westminster Cathedral, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. In France, students will travel to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower and enjoy a boat ride on the River Seine. The Castle of Chillon and beautiful scenery in towns surrounded by the Alps will be explored in Switzerland. In Liechtenstein, students will explore the Royal Castle. The historic village of Seefeld will be visited when the students travel to Austria. In Italy, students will get the chance to explore Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. The final country students will explore is Germany where they will visit the ancient village of Rothenburg. Many more sightseeing adventures in the countries have also been planned.

Fundraising Events

To attend the trip, the cost per student totals $9,000. To cover the costs, the students are organizing fundraising events.

Their first event was a Glow Run held at Cyclone Center on September 29. Upcoming fundraising events include: a Spaghetti Dinner at the Denver Community Center on Sunday, October 13 from 4 PM to 6 PM, a Middle School Halloween Costume Dance on Friday, October 25 from 7 PM to 10 PM, and a Soup and Salad Lunch at the Denver Community Center on Monday, November 4 from 11 AM to 1:30 PM.

The cost of the Spaghetti Dinner will be $5 for ages 10 and under and $10 for ages 11 and up. The Halloween Dance, will cost $5 per student. Glow sticks, candy and snacks will be for sale. The Soup and Salad Lunch will be a free-will offering.

The Denver Iowa Ambassador Music students have set up an account at Denver Savings Bank under account name “2020 IAM Denver Students” if you would like to provide a monetary donation. The deadline for the students to have their trip paid in full is November 15.

“Band has been an important part of my education and I look forward to playing in several different countries,” said Bailey Dunkin. “It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
