By Sean Kiefer

The Denver varsity wrestling team has been outstanding in recent years, making the state duals four years in a row.

Denver came into the 2020 IHSSA State Duals Tournament ranked #6 and wrestled a total of three times throughout the day. The Cyclones first wrestled the #3 West Sioux Falcons at 9 a.m., then they wrestled #7 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at 11 a.m., then #4 Lake Mills at 4:30 p.m. The Cyclones had four wrestlers, Joe Ebaugh, Jacob Moore, John Ebaugh, and Isaac Schimmels, wrestle the next three days in the individual state tournament.

The Cyclone’s first match of the day against West Sioux was a very tough one. The Falcons and Cyclones started off the match in the 145 weight class with the Falcons recording an early pin when Dillon Lynott recorded a fall over Brody Shover of the Cyclones. The 152 weight class had Ben Foelske pinned by Seth Salker, which put the Falcons up 12-0 early. However, the Cyclones were able to bounce back with Alex Krabbenhoft and John Ebaugh, as they both recorded pins over their opponents. The Falcons regained ground over the Cyclones after Carson Lynott recorded an 8-3 decision win over Brennen Graber at 182 and Kyler Bak recorded a swift pin over Nathan Eggena at 195. With the Falcons up 21-12, the Cyclones shrunk the deficit after Trevor Dorn recorded a pin to make the score 21-18. However, the Falcons would control the Cyclones after this weight class by winning the next 6 weight classes with pins and decision wins. In the end, the Falcons came out on top 54-24 and advanced to the semifinals while the Cyclones headed to the first consolation round.

This round featured Denver and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows with the match starting at the 152 weight class. Garrett Seaba for the Cowboys won a technical fall over Ben Foelske which put them up 5-0. The Cyclones would win the next four weight classes, with John Ebaugh recording a pin, Brennen Graber recording a 9-6 decision win, Nathan Eggena with a 13-5 major decision win, and Trevor Dorn recording a pin. However, in the two heavyweight classes, the Cowboys’ Kain Nelson and Daniel Chavez would record pins to make the score 19-17 in the Cyclones’ favor. The Cowboys would regain the lead with Rigo Bobadilla recording a 14-6 major decision win over Rhett Bonnette. However, the Cyclones would seal the match with falls in the next four weight classes from Joe Ebaugh, Chase Lyons, Jacob Moore, and Isaac Schimmels. The Cowboys would record two more pins with Remington Hanson and Reed Abbas, but the Cyclones came out on top 43-33 and advanced to the 5th place match.

In the 5th place match, the Cyclones faced a familiar Lake Mills. The match started at the 160 weight class with a late fall from Ashten Love to put the Bulldogs up an early 6-0. Elijah Wagner would record a 5-3 decision win over Brennen Graber at 170 and Nathan Eggena would be pinned at 182 to make the score 15-0 in Lake Mills’ favor. Trevor Dorn would record his final high school win with a pin over Peyton Severson to make the score 15-6. The Cyclones would be pinned in the next three weight classes to take the Bulldogs up to 33-6. Joe Ebaugh and Jacob Moore both recorded pins to shrink the gap at 113 and 126. At 132, Alex Beaty pinned Josh Terrill and, at 138, the Bulldogs received a forfeit from the Cyclones to make the score 48-18.
