Cylones claim 8th win against the Eagles
The Denver boys’ basketball team returned to action at the Cyclone Center on Saturday, January 2 to face the Eagles from Ankeny Christian Academy (5-2).

The Cyclones (7-0), led by seniors Bryce Phelps, Isaac Besh, Will Curtis, Kyler Matthias and junior Caylor Hoffer, started strong with the first score of the game by Matthias. The first quarter score went back and forth with the Cyclones leading by 3 at the end.

The second quarter tested the Cyclones as the Eagles took the lead with consistent 3-point shooting. The Eagles maintained the lead at halftime.

The Eagles continued to soar and increased their lead by 11 early in the 3rd quarter. The score went back and forth as the Eagles answered each time Denver scored.

The Cyclones continued to trail by 10 at the start of the 4th quarter. Denver battled back with key steals and baskets by Besh, Phelps, and Matthias. Sophomore Ethan Schoville came in to provide valuable defense.

Denver began their rally with a steal and score by Curtis. Phelps decreased the Eagles’ lead to 4 by making two free throw shots. A basket by Besh tied the game at 63. The Cyclones took the lead with 2:42 to go with a score by Phelps. Denver remained on the attack and were able to wear down the Eagles to increase the lead by 6 with a minute remaining. The Eagles continued to fight, but, in the end, the Cyclones were victorious with a 75-65 score.

The Cyclones resumed conference play at Wapsie Valley on Jan. 5 and played Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday, Jan. 8 at home. (See stories on pages 6-7.)
