Denver volleyball closes out week in #2 spot

The #2-ranked Denver Cyclone volleyball team took a 2-0 sweep over four teams in the New Hampton tournament on Sept. 4.

The Denver girls defeated 3A #15-ranked New Hampton as well as Don Bosco, Waukon, and Tripoli.

The team followed that up with their 12th win of the season with a 3-0 takedown of Columbus Catholic (7-7) on Sept. 9.

Reese Johnson tallied 38 of the team’s 41 assists. Kayla Knowles and Allison Bonnette each had 11 of the team’s 43 kills. The Cyclone’s eight blocks were by Jessica Gergen (three), Johnson (two), Knowles (one), Anna Curtis (one), and Avery Forde (one).

Grace Lyons led Denver with 13 digs, followed by Kate Clinton and Johnson with 10 each.
At Aplington-Parkersburg

The Cyclones continued their winning streak with 2-0 victories over Nashua-Plainfield, AGWSR, and Grundy Center at the Aplington-Parkersburg Invite on Sept. 11.

The team took their first loss of the season against 3A #2-ranked West Delaware. West Delaware scored the first win of the game with a 21-15 victory in the opening set. Denver came back to claim the win in the second with a score of 22-20, but West Delaware pulled away with the win in the third with a score of 15-12.
