Cyclones take down #3 South Hardin for NICL runner-up finish

#7-ranked Denver (30-6) opened its first night of the North Iowa Cedar League (NICL) volleyball tournament with a 2-1 win over #9 Wapsie Valley (19-9). The Warriors took the first round 25-22 before Denver claimed the final two 25-15 and 15-10 in the Oct. 5 meet.

Allison Bonnette marked her 1000th career kills during the game. The team totaled 33 kills and was led by Avery Forde with eight and Jessica Gergen and Reese Johnson with six each. Reese Johnson had 26 of the team’s 33 assists. The previous week, Johnson had set a new school record for career assists. The team had eight blocks against Wapsie Valley, including three from Forde, and 45 digs. Kayla Knowles had 15 digs, followed by Grace Lyons with 10.

NICL Conference Finals

The Cyclones bested undefeated and #3-ranked South Hardin for a 2-0 semi-final victory on Oct. 7 in New Hartford. Forde had two serve aces. The team had 29 kills, 26 assists, and 30 digs.

Denver faced off against defending state champs and #1-ranked Dike-New Hartford (38-1) in the final. Dike-New Hartford took a 2-0 win over Denver. The Cyclones finished the game with 15 kills and assists and 27 digs. Kate Clinton, Lyons, and Johnson each had a serve ace.
