Girls’ track named Conference champs, boys take fourth
By Micah Knebel

This year’s spring season has been hampered by wind, cold, and rain. Denver’s May 2 coed track event was also another battle against Mother Nature. While the teams were able to compete in some events, others were canceled due to rain.

In those events that were able to go on, Denver finished on top with 112 points and Charles City in second with 97. The 800-sprint medley team posted a second-place finish, and seven events took second place.

The girls, who tied for third with 66 points, had many of their events called off before they could compete. They did, however, pull four first place finishes including Elaina Hildebrandt in the 100-meter dash and Anna Curtis in the 400-meter dash. Sydney Eggena claimed first in both the shot put and discus.

NICL Conference

The Cyclone girls were crowned conference champs after a race with numerous conference champs, runners-up, and personal records.

But head coach Abby Fliehler noted the victory didn’t come from the effort of a few.

“All of the girls stepped up, many to run four races, some very close together,” said Fliehler. “These girls rise to the occasion under pressure and trust one another to do their part to contribute to the point total during these championship meets. This is not a team made up of one star.

“We talked at the beginning of the season that track is not an individual sport, and, for this team, this complete team title proves that,” the coach continued. “We are all in this together, doing our best for one another to support and to make each other better.”

The team tallied 127 points. Dike-New Hartford finished second with 114, followed by Jesup with 82.
