Boys claim two wins in week’s matchups

On Jan. 16, the Denver boys (4-10) pulled a 40-point win over Vinton-Shellsburg (2-9) in basketball action. The Cyclones led the Vikings 38-14 in the first half. In the third quarter, the Vikings scored 21 points to the Cyclone’s 18, still trailing Denver 56-35. The fourth quarter brought 34 points to the Cyclones and 15 to Vikings, ending the game 90-50.

Clayton Liddle scored 27 points for the Cyclones with six successful three-point attempts. Talan Lafrentz, who scored five three-point shots, tallied 17 points in total. Lafrentz also led the team with six assists. Logan Beaty had six of the team’s 29 rebounds.

The girls (6-7) fell short 30-56 against 3A #13-ranked Vinton-Shellsburg (6-5). The Vikings held a 35-point lead at halftime but Denver was able to cut that down by a few points in the second half.

Against Dike-New Hartford

On Jan. 17, the boys edged out Dike-New Hartford (6-6) by five points. Keaton Rothmeyer led in scoring with 20 points. He also had six of the team’s 29 rebounds. Kasey Wirtjes and Lafrentz were the second highest scorers with 16 points each.

The girls continued their tough week of competition by taking on the undefeated, #1 girls’ team. DNH dominated the first quarter with a score of 23-0. They moved their score to 39 in the second with Denver landing four points. The teams closed out the night with a score of 54-18, giving DNH their 13th win.

Against Aplington-Parkersburg

Jan. 20 ended in a pair of losses for the Cyclones. Denver faced the 2A #2-ranked and undefeated Aplington-Parkersburg boys and the #13 girls (12-2).

The boys fell 41-85 against the Falcons. Scorers for Denver were Liddle (10), Lafrentz (nine), Keaton Rothmeyer (seven), Wirtjes (six), Logan Beaty (six), and Ethan Reiter (three). Wirtjes led for rebounds with eight.

The girls took a 40-51 loss against the Falcons.

The boys closed out the week with a record of 6-11 and the girls 6-10.
