Elton Herman Schutte

Elton Herman Schutte, 91, of Readlyn, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the Denver Sunset Home in Denver.
Elton was born on March 27, 1932, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Rueben and Esther (Wittenburg) Schutte. Elton was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger. He attended parochial school at Immanuel Lutheran and graduated from Readlyn High School in 1950. Elton was united in marriage to Shirley Nolte on November 9, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church, Readlyn. He served in the United State Army from 1952 to 1954.
After his honorable discharge, Elton and Shirley moved to Waterloo, where Elton worked for the United States Postal Service. In 1963, the couple moved to Readlyn and Elton started working for Customer Farm Service in Readlyn. They owned and operated Readlyn Farm Center from 1976-1997. After his retirement, they delivered motor homes for Winnebago and he started Schutte Spraying.
Elton was a huge fan of the black and gold, Wapsie Valley, Maquoketa Valley, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Pittsburgh Steelers and always enjoyed following his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s teams. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, softball and the many trips to Disney World with the grandkids. Elton and Shirley enjoyed the ownership and betting on greyhound dogs.
Elton is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Schutte of Tripoli; a son, Jeff (Judy) Schutte of Readlyn; a daughter, Becky (Bear) Welch of Hopkinton, Iowa; a daughter, Lori (Barry) Fortsch of Readlyn; and a daughter, Joni (Skip) Swyers of Readlyn; 20 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Schutte of Waverly and Nancy Erhardt of Readlyn and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Shirley Schutte in 2014, brother Orlyn Schutte and sister, Carolyn Cox; two brothers-in-law, Bob Erhardt and Darrel Cox; a grandson, Andy Kaufman and a great-grandson, Beckett Kaufman.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 20, 2023, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Readlyn with Pastor Miguel Gonzalez-Feliciano officiating. Burial will be held in St. Paul's Cemetery, Readlyn. Military Rites at the grave will be conducted by the Acker-Matthias American Legion Post #653 of Denver. Visitation will be held at St. Paul's Church in Readlyn on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
